Artist Statement: I have been an artist of sorts since childhood. My father was an artist and musician and my parents encouraged this in me as a young boy. I have always been intrigued by the works of the Surrealists of the early 1900’s.

It is my belief that artists were historians for thousands of years, but only when photography assumed the role of documenting history were artists finally freed to create. Thus began the development of the “isms” of art, impressionism, cubism, and surrealism, to name a few.

To me, surrealism is the “stuff of dreams”, the things we see when we close our eyes and drift off to other places, where things are often vividly real, but not as we think they should be. Or are they ? Have you ever awaken from a dream and paused to wonder if it were real…… or is this the dream?

I am most moved when a piece of white canvas is transformed into something that conveys a message or challenges a belief, such as an image that might invoke wonder, curiosity or even sheer terror. These things we call art can be appreciated in many ways, from simple compositions of color, balance and beauty, to images that cause us to feel.

Michael is fine artist who paints original western, wildlife and surrealism on traditional canvas, hardboard, tanned hides and 3D models of varying sizes. He majored in Fine Art at the University of Montana in Missoula, and later completed advanced degrees in the study of Naturology and Herbology. He finished a 26-year career in Avionics and Systems Engineering before early retirement and today makes his home in the small rural community of Glendive, Montana.

Michael also develops graphical artwork, web graphics and web animations as well as develops and maintains small websites. He has participated in numerous public and community art projects across Montana.
